Who We Are
Veteran Housing Australia is Australia’s only registered community housing provider dedicated exclusively to veterans and their families — and the lead organisation addressing veteran homelessness.
Our vision is clear: to end veteran homelessness in Australia.
We believe every veteran deserves a safe place to sleep. Without secure, stable housing, it becomes far more difficult for veterans and their families to address health challenges, rebuild relationships, find employment, or reconnect with their community. Housing stability is not just important — it is foundational.
Housing first, always
Veterans transitioning from military to civilian life can face complex and overlapping challenges, including physical and mental health issues, relationship breakdown, unemployment, and difficulties navigating civilian systems.
Decades of advocacy and frontline experience — informed by the legacy of Carry On have shown that when housing is unavailable, unstable or unaffordable, these challenges are intensified. Progress becomes harder to sustain, and independence more difficult to achieve.
Our response is deliberate and evidence-based: Housing First.
We apply the Housing First model to the greatest extent possible, prioritising immediate access to safe, secure housing without preconditions. By placing housing first, we create the stability veterans need to engage with support services, build their lives, and plan for the future with confidence.
Housing is not the reward at the end of recovery. It is the starting point.
What we do
Veteran Housing Australia develops, manages, and advocates for Veteran specific, housing across Australia, delivering solutions across crisis, transitional, supportive and long-term affordable housing.
Working with government, ex-service organisations, community partners, and supporters, we:
- Provide safe and affordable housing for veterans and their families
- Deliver both long-lerm housing stability and crisis accommodation solutions
- Enable access to wrap-around referral and support services through trusted partners
- Advocate nationally for better systems, policy, and outcomes to address veteran homelessness
As the only veteran-focused registered community housing provider in Australia, our role is to act as both provider and coordinator — connecting people, partners, and housing assets to maximise impact.
Our Story
Veteran Housing Australia (VHA) was born from a simple but urgent truth: too many of the men and women who served our country are now facing homelessness or housing insecurity.
For decades, Carry On—our parent organisation—has stood beside veterans and their families, delivering humanitarian aid, practical support, and subsidised housing. With more than 90 years of experience, Carry On has witnessed firsthand the challenges veterans face when transitioning to civilian life, particularly when it comes to securing safe and affordable housing.
VHA is more than housing—it’s a promise.
The need is real. Veterans are dramatically overrepresented in Australia’s homeless population, and without stable housing, the risks of unemployment, poor health, and social isolation grow even greater. A safe home is not just a roof overhead—it is the foundation for recovery, dignity, and hope.
Recognising this, VHA was created as a dedicated service to focus solely on ending veteran homelessness. We draw on Carry On’s proud legacy while expanding our capacity to meet the pressing housing needs of today’s veteran community.
At VHA, we listen to veterans. We hear their stories, their struggles, and their hopes for the future. Our mission is clear: to provide affordable, secure housing that empowers veterans and their families to rebuild their lives, thrive, and succeed.
