Our Founder’s Stories

Before founding The Carry On Club, William J. Hawkins served his country during World War I. More than four decades later, encouraged by his grandchildren, he put pen to paper and captured a collection of remarkable memories from his time in service.

Published in 1962 under the title The King’s Horses and Other Memories, these stories offer a rare and personal glimpse into the experiences, challenges, and characters that shaped William’s military journey.

Although William passed away in 1968, his words continue to inspire. We have digitised each story to ensure his memories are preserved and shared with future generations. Through these stories, William’s legacy lives on, and his enduring commitment to supporting veterans continues to be felt today.

We invite you to explore the collection below and discover the stories behind the man whose vision helped lay the foundations for Veteran Housing Australia.

Preface

A few years ago, during an after-lunch conversation with my grandchildren, I told them the story of “Man Overboard”, which appears in these pages under “Homeward Bound”.

At its conclusion, Dennis said, “Pompa, why don’t you write a book with stories like that?”

I accepted the challenge and trust that Dennis, Dee, and Pete will derive as much pleasure from reading these memories as I have in recalling them.
